JEFFERSON CITY - Cathleen D. Gipson, 99, formerly of Sikeston, died Feb. 1, 2003, at the Capital Healthcare Center.

Born June 8, 1903, in Lake County, Tenn., daughter of the late Clay and Rose Brown Driskill, she attended school in Helena, Ark., and graduated from the Ensley (Ala.) High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sikeston, where she taught the Arbutus Sunday school class for 26 years. In 1973, she retired as Scott County director of the Division of Family Services. She had also served as DFS director for Ste. Genevieve, Franklin and Mississippi counties and served on the board of directors for the Sikeston Nutrition Center. A member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she was also a volunteer at the Sikeston Mental Health Center. In 1994, she was voted Mrs. Meadow Brook in the Mrs. Nursing Home Contest and was first runner-up in the District 7 event and second runner-up in the state Mrs. Nursing Home Contest in 1994.

On Aug. 22, 1923, she married Thomas Baty who preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1952. She and Clifford Lee Gipson Sr. were married April 1, 1961, and he died Jan. 13, 1967.

Survivors include: one daughter, Norma J. Lenon of Jefferson City; two grandchildren, Steve Lenon of Palmetto, Fla., and Suzanne Pierce of Kansas City; and four great-grandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Friend Cemetery in Oran with Dr. Rick Ramsey, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sikeston, officiating.

Buescher Memorial Home of Jefferson City and Ponder Funeral Home of Sikeston are in charge of arrangements.
