Born Sept. 8, 1915, in Corinth, Miss., son of the late John N. and Louella Russell Mathis, he lived in Mississippi County most of his life where he was a land owner and farmer. A member of the First Church of God of East Prairie, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
On Aug. 6, 1945, he married Gladys Marie Miller who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Kenny Keck of East Prairie; two grandchildren and their spouses, Brad and Julie Keck and Tammi and Jon Hutcheson of East Prairie; and three great-grandchildren, Clint Hutcheson, Victoria Hutcheson and Ali Keck of East Prairie.
Three brothers, William Richard Mathis, Cye Mathis and J.D. Mathis; and four sisters, Thelma Mars, Grady Jones, Finnie Morrison and Kellie Mathis preceded him in death.
Visitation begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Shelby Funeral Home, where services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will follow in East Prairie Memorial Park Cemetery.
