SCOTT CITY -- The first round of the Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament was completed on Tuesday night, with Oran beating Chaffee 86-49 and Kelly defeating Delta 69-49. The tournament will be back in action on Thursday with Scott City playing Scott Central at 7 p.m., followed by Oran versus Kelly at 8:30 p.m.
Winless Chaffee played Oran close in the first half, but didn't have the firepower to keep up with the Eagles for four quarters.
The Red Devils trailed just seven points at the break, but were outscored 52-22 in the second half. Chaffee played the game with just five players.
"We came out a little shorthanded," said Chaffee coach David Mirly. "We took Oran's best shot early and made a ballgame of it at halftime. Their quickness took over in the second half and they stepped up their defensive pressure."
Patrick Friga led Oran with 17 points. Matt Seyer hit five 3-pointers and finished with 15. Garrett Roslen and Nathan Seyer each contributed 12, Ryne Wood checked in with 11 and Tyler Cookson added 10.
For Chaffee, Sid Burks led the way with 15 points. Brent Thomason followed with 13.
"I was proud of the way the guys played tonight," said Mirly. "Oran has a very good team."
Chaffee (0-9) will face Leopold on Tuesday. Oran (11-4) will take on Kelly in the semifinal round on Thursday at 8 p.m.
