ZALMA - James C. Merchant, 78, died Jan. 24, 2003, at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.
Born May 9, 1924, to the late William and May Crowder Merchant, he was a former resident of Madison, Ill., before moving to Zalma 13 years ago. A retired maintenance man for Marhan trucking in Madison, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Surviving are: one son; two daughters; four stepsons, Fred Tanner of Madison and William Tanner, David Tanner and Ronald Tanner of Granite City, Ill.; one stepdaughter, Janet Thorton of Granite City; a half-brother, Bob Wilson of Madison, Ill.; one sister, Tiny Smith of Madison; and five stepgrandchildren. Also a special friend, Joy French of Zalma, survives.
Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. today at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Puxico.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the New Hope Cemetery near McGee with the Rev. Larry Underwood of McGee officiating.
Burial will follow with full military honors provided by the Veterans Honor Guard of Poplar Bluff.
