Looking Back in Time at Jan. 22

Wednesday, January 22, 2003

SIKESTON - Sikeston's coldest weather of the winter blew into the city on a north wind at mid-week, causing many cars to stall and residents to heap coal into roaring furnaces. The low reading was 2 above in the city and one above zero at Harvey Parks Airport.

SIKESTON - Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hammock are the parents of a baby boy born Jan. 18 at Missouri Delta Community Hospital.

SIKESTON - Burglary and other crimes keep growing in number each year. Sikeston Department of Public Safety Director Tom Posey said Sikeston citizens and their neighbors can help. If the city's Neighborhood Watch program catches on, signs could be placed around Sikeston to show thieves that Sikeston has an active neighborhood watch program.

SIKESTON - What started as a traffic violation Friday ended up being possibly the largest marijuana seizure in Missouri history. A Texas couple were traveling north bound Friday when their vehicle was stopped by the Missouri State Highway Patrol for a traffic violation. Upon investigation of the vehicle, officers discovered a false wall in the cargo department of their rental truck. The patrol's drug-sniffing dog, Canine Ben, was requested and indicated the presence of drugs. The false wall was removed, revealing approximately 1,100 pounds of processed marijuana, wrapped in plastic.

SIKESTON - Sikeston City Manager Steve Borgsmiller will present a light-hearted reflection on his experiences in the school system and how they have helped him in his new endeavor as city manager.
