BERNIE - R.B. Woods Jr., 74, died Jan. 11, 2003, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born Aug. 9, 1928, at Bernie, son of the late Roy Bickford and Elsie Dora Slayton Woods Sr., he was an elder in the Community of Christ Church in Bernie, where he had served as district president for the church. He was mayor of Bernie for 28 years and was a charter member of the Bernie Lions Club, past secretary of the Bernie School Board, supporter of the Bernie Mules and had also served as a city alderman. Woods served on the boards of the Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation and Stoddard County IDA. He owned and operated Woods Supermarket in Bernie for 48 years and was employed by the Sikeston Wal-Mart Supercenter.
On April 2, 1949, at Bernie, he married Marjorie Fears who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two sons, Roy Bickford Woods III of New Orleans, La., and Gary Steven Woods of Lake Charles, La.; three sisters, Maxie O'Heren and Betty Branum of Bernie and Lorene Williams of Santa Fe, N.M.; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandsons.
One sister, Nadine Harmon, preceded him in death.
Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie, where services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday with Elder Ron Rubottom, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
