Portageville rolls past Chaffee, 39-14

Sunday, September 26, 2004

CHAFFEE - The Portageville Bulldogs notched their third win of the season Friday night by downing the Chaffee Red Devils 39-14.

Antonio Scott rushed 11 times for 192 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs.

"Our kids played really well and offensively we are coming around a lot better now. Defensively we have a lot of kids who are hurt and we're playing a lot of them out of position and we're struggling right now," said Bulldog coach Ashley Swims. "Hopefully we'll get everybody healthy by next week and have our studs back on defense. I knew Chaffee could throw the ball pretty good and we had our rookie secondary back there. I knew that would hurt us pretty bad and it did."

The Red Devils, who were decided underdogs in the contest, controlled the tempo in the early going of the opening quarter. On some strong running by senior Brad Uhrhan and sophomore David Rhoda, Chaffee looked impressive. Jesse Gettings hauled in a Jeff Daugherty pass and gained 30 yards to the Bulldog 18-yard line during the drive.

From that point things deteriorated for the Red Devils when they lost the ball on downs after the Swims called a timeout to rally his troops.

Scott promptly put the Bulldogs on the board when he sprinted 81 yards for the first score of the contest on the first play from scrimmage at the 6:47 mark.

Scott added two more touchdowns before the quarter ended on runs of 19 and three yards. The last score came with just 10 seconds left and Portageville led 20-0 after one period.

Casey Ash scored the only touchdown of the second quarter on a run that covered eight yards to give Portageville a commanding 26-0 halftime lead.

Uhrhan put Chaffee's first score on the board with 1:06 left in the third quarter on a 2-yard run to make the score 26-6 as the inexperienced Bulldog defense was victimized repeatedly on pass plays.

A Josh Simmons interception at the 7:50 mark of the final frame killed what was a promising Red Devil drive that had reached the Bulldog 8-yard line.

Then Aaron Kershaw broke loose for a 92-yard romp on the next play to make the score 39-6 after Scott's 32-yard score at the beginning of the quarter.

Chaffee scored a consolation touchdown with 4:08 left in the contest and executed an on-side kick that gave them one final chance to put some points on the board, but a great defensive play by Bulldog Thomas Bracey produced a sack to end Chaffee's last hope.

Chaffee's record slips to 0-4 on the season and will travel to Scott City to take on the Rams while Portageville, who is 3-1, will host Kennett.
