ORAN--The Oran Eagles improved to 4-2 on the season Friday night when they cruised past the Delta Bobcats 77-49. Delta's record slipped to 1-5.
Delta was able to hang with the home team in the first quarter on good hustle and the combined scoring of Joey Keys and Matt Kinder. They trailed by only one at 17-16 after one quarter.
"We played Bell City last night, we played Oran tonight and it really showed. We are in pretty good shape, but I guess not good enough," said Delta coach Robert Stein. "Having said that, they are obviously the best two teams in the district. They're very good and it's a little bit of a joke that Oran is not ranked in the top ten in the state."
The half-court press and some hot shooting by the Eagles basically sealed the deal in the second quarter. Ryan Bouge connected on four treys and Patrick Friga tallied 13 points en route to a 32-point period. The barrage opened up a 49-27 advantage at the half for Oran.
"We played pretty well, but we played without two of our best players most of the night," said Oran coach Mitch Wood. "We're trying to get healthy before the Christmas tournament, so we left some players out tonight."
Neither team could find the range very well in the third quarter, but it was Delta that really struggled. When Keys finally scored a the team's first field goal in the period, there was only 2:09 remaining. That made the count 62-35 going into the final quarter.
Oran claimed the final quarter 14-13 .
For the visiting Bobcats, Joey Keys scored 26 points to lead all scorers in the game.
Both teams will compete next week in the Christman tournament in Cape.
Delta won the jayvee contest 54-42.
