SIKESTON - Filing for candidates for area school boards opened Tuesday. However with schools closed for the holidays, most seeking election in April had only only an hour or two on Christmas Eve to get their names listed on the ballot, but filing reopens in January.
The Scott County Central superintendent's office was open for two hours Tuesday for filings then will reopen from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 2 for filing, which continues until 5 p.m. Jan. 21. The three-year terms, currently held by Tim McIntyre and Kenny Rodgers, will be filled in the April election.
Patrons in the Kelly School District will fill the two three-year terms now held by Jim Simmons and Laurie Romas. Those who did not make the two-hour filing on Tuesday can file for the offices from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during school days through 5 p.m. Jan. 21.
With Sikeston attorney Rice "Pete" Burns serving as the board secretary for the Sikeston school district, filing is conducted at his office, 733 N. Main St., providing one of the few opportunities for residents to list their candidacy during the holidays. The terms of Dan Jennings and Steve Millington are expiring and so far Ann W. Jones and Mary L. White-Ross have filed for the board openings.
The East Prairie School District superintendent's office was open for an hour Tuesday but will reopen for those interested in serving on the board on Jan. 6 with filing continuing until 5 p.m. Jan. 21. The three-year terms of Ricky Penrod and Martin Lucas are expiring.
Gideon School Board members Joe Woolverton and Bill McCain filed for re-election to three-year terms on Tuesday at the superintendent's office. Filing will reopen from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 2 at the office through Jan. 21.
Refiling early Tuesday to serve on the New Madrid County R-1 Board were Jean Higgerson and Ralph E. Barnwell. Those also wishing to seek the two-three-year openings on the board can now file beginning Jan. 6 during school hours through Jan. 21 at the superintendent's office.
Portageville School District Board members Wallace Kellams, who now serves as board president; and Dr. David Boyd, will have their terms expire in 2003. Filing was open for an hour on Christmas Eve then the office reopens for candidates interested in filing from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 6 through Jan. 5 at 5 p.m.
The terms of Risco School Board members Clayton Knight and Curt Patterson are expiring. Those who didn't make the hour open for filing Tuesday can stop in at the superintendent's office beginning at 8 a.m. Jan. 6 through 5 p.m. Jan. 21.
Keith Hicks filed for re-election while the Richland superintendent's office was open Tuesday however school officials said current board members Randy Corlew has indicated he will not seek another term. David Wheeler did add his name to the list of candidates Tuesday. Filing will reopen on Jan. 2 at the superintendent's office.
