SIKESTON - Joseph Fletcher Cook, 22, was reported missing in action Feb. 27. He was attached to United Nations ships that tried to blockade Japanese troops from Java.

40 years ago

SIKESTON - Miss Electa O'Hara was honored for 37 years of teaching at the annual dinner meeting of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association. More than 250 educators attended.

20 years ago

SIKESTON - After 21 idle days, the Sikeston Power Station fired up Saturday. It had closed Feb. 20 to let the Southwest Power Administration drain excess water from the reservoirs. While it was powered down, much of the equipment was tested.

SIKESTON - David L. Steelman, Republican candidate for attorney general, visited with Dr. Robert Buchanan Thursday to learn more from the local superintendent on the issues and to voice what he believes can be done if elected attorney general in November. Steelman called for an end to federally-ordered school desegregation in Missouri.


SIKESTON - Members of the Beta Sigma Phi Upsilon Omega chapter were hard at work Thursday trying to get area politicians and celebrities to volunteer some of their time to be a car hop from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sonic when the organization will sponsor a fund-raising event. These celebrities will be taking tips for donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.


CHARLESTON - The Dogwood-Azalea Junior Princess and Queen will be crowned in contests on April 11. Contestants must reside in Mississippi County and entries are due by April 3.
