Softball Roundup

PORTAGEVILLE -- Chaffee's softball team jumped right back on the winning track Monday, hammering Portageville 15-0 in four innings.

"Overall, I was real pleased with the game today," said Chaffee coach Mark Devenport. "The kids responded really well. We lost to Scott City on Wednesday, then came back with an outstanding practice on Thursday. It carried over into today."

Abby Walter threw her second no-hitter of the season in the win, allowing three walks with five strikeouts.

At the plate designated hitter Samantha Hendricks was in the zone, batting 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

"This was her second start of the year," said Devenport. "She added a little extra punch to the lineup today."

Walter was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Kate Pfefferkorn was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Brittany Bennett was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Mallory Kiefer and Crystal Morgan also had hits for the Lady Red Devils. Portageville's Alyson Crafton was charged with the loss.

Chaffee (6-1) will travel to Malden today for a 4 p.m. game.

NEW MADRID -- New Madrid County Central's softball team beat Gideon in a battle of undefeated teams on Monday, 10-1.

Freshman Karrah Tanner was impressive on the mound for the Lady Eagles, allowing no earned runs with three hits and one walk. She took 10 batters down by strikeout, improving to 4-0 on the year.

"Karrah was just outstanding on the mound today," said NMCC coach Steve Rogers. "She threw a great game for a freshman. She's an excellent No. 2 behind Heather (Robey). We are looking forward to some big things out of her the rest of the year."

NMCC plated the 10 runs on eight hits. Renita Hamilton was 2-for-3 and Jenni Glenn was 2-for-4. Lauren Daniels, Morgan Hodges, Ashley Brittain and Ashley Gantner also contributed hits in the victory.

Gideon's Winchester was charged with the loss. Winchester and Mosby had hits for the Lady Bulldogs.

NMCC (11-0) will travel to Scott City today for a 4 p.m. game. The red-hot Lady Rams are riding a five-game winning streak.

"I'm sure we'll get (Shana) Wadlington," said Rogers. "It should be a barnburner."

JACKSON -- Kelly's softball team manhandles Oak Ridge on Monday, 15-0.

The game was picked up at the last minute, and was placed at Jackson due to renovation at Oak Ridge.

Dana Essner picked up the win for the Lady Hawks, allowing three hits and no walks with 11 strikeouts.

At the plate, she was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Kelly Essner was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Cara Scherer was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Monica Senciboy was 2-for-4.

Christy Kluesner and Ashley Kern also had hits.

"(Oak Ridge) had a little faster pitching than we've faced, but we were still able to pull out 11 hits," said Kelly coach Rhonda Evans. "We only had five walks, so we were putting the ball in play and making them work for it."

Kelly (7-0) will travel to Portageville today at 4 p.m. Oak Ridge's Lauren Glueck was charged with the loss. The Lady Bluejays saw hits from Glueck, Felter and Schaper.

DEXTER -- Dexter's softball team was edged out by Campbell on Monday, 5-4.

The Lady Bearcats held a 3-0 lead going into the sixth inning, but two errors and one walk led to three unearned runs to tie the game. Dexter then went ahead 4-3 in the seventh, only to see Campbell come back with two more runs in the bottom of the inning to pull out the win. Jessie McClendon took the hard luck loss, allowing just three hits to Campbell. Brittany Greer and Darcie Sneed had Dexter's only hits.

"It was a low-hitting game," said Dexter coach Don Goodwin. "Both pitchers did a good job."

Dexter (3-6) will host Richland today at 4 p.m.
