CHAFFEE -- The Chaffee Fire Department recently received a grant from United States Department of Agriculture Office of Rural Development.
"The City administrator brought the grant to our attention," Chaffee Fire Chief Mike Lee said. "It was a 75 percent grant so we jumped right on that."
Lee said Chaffee's rural development funds in the amount of $15,150 will be used for purchasing fire safety gear and equipment, such as turnout gear, a rescue saw and 10 air bottles for the Chaffee Fire Department.
According to a statement from U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, several projects received grants in the Southeast Missouri region. Funding will be used for a wide variety of items including the development of an educational facility, to purchase a new fire truck, the construction of a new fire station and for the installation of an early warning storm system.
Other area cities received funding. The City of Puxico received $15,000 for fire gear and equipment for the Puxico Volunteer Fire Department and $7,273 was awarded the City of Bernie to purchase fire equipment. The Essex Improvement Corp. received $37,500 to purchase a fire truck for the Essex community.
"Our communities benefit great from the service and supplies that have been made possible by this funding," said Emerson. "I am proud of all these communities for the work that they have put into securing these funds and look forward to visiting with them as they begin the work these funds have made possible."
