BELL CITY -- Katie Niemczyk, Bell City's mighty mite volleyball standout at 5-foot-3, was chosen to the Class 1 All-State second team by the Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Association.
What Niemczyk lacked in size, she more than compensated with effort.
That grit and determination led Bell City to a state title in 2003 and an appearance in the quarterfinal round this season.
Niemczyk's defensive play during the 2004 season was nothing short of outstanding. She had 301 digs, a 10-plus per-game average.
On the offensive side, she compiled more than 400 kills in her junior and senior campaigns.
While setting a record for digs in the state tournament with 71 during the '03 championship run, she also established a championship match record for digs with 30 and tied the mark for kills with 17.
Amber Nenninger of Leopold joined Niemczyk on the Class 1 all-state second team.
The MHSVCA also announced the All-Region, Southeast Area teams.
Named to the Class 1 squad were Niemczyk, Nenninger, Lori Vandermeirden of Leopold, Angela Broshuis of Advance, Alicia Broshuis of Advance and Emily Burch of Bell City
Casey Cartwright of Scott City was selected to the Class 2 All-Region team and Katie Alsup of Dexter made the Class 3 squad.
