Next week and the following week the city of Sikeston will offer residents the annual free fall clean-up services provided by the city's solid waste contractor Sonny's Solid Waste. This annual two-week opportunity gives every resident a chance to dispose of some of those large unwanted items. Drive around the city and you'll see that in many areas we need this opportunity.
I am frustrated that some residents in some neighborhoods live with trash and debris and clutter and unwanted items but often don't take the free opportunity to rid themselves of these eyesores. That lack of pride is a source of great concern for everyone in Sikeston.
The process to participate is simple. On your regular trash pick-up day just leave those large items out by the curb or alley where your trash is normally located. Some larger appliances require a minimal fee for disposal but most bulky items will be removed free of charge.
It wouldn't do any harm either if you volunteer to help a neighbor remove a large trash item. When surrounding homes are clear of debris it helps the entire neighborhood.
This annual fall clean-up is one of the more thoughtful services provided by the city. It's now up to the residents to take full advantage of this opportunity and see if individually and collectively we can't have a cleaner community. It helps with the image to visitors but more importantly, it helps with the image for those of us who live and work here daily.
