SIKESTON - A total of 1,554 students are enrolled in the public school system of Sikeston, Superintendent R.A. Harper announced today. There are 533 students enrolled in the South grade School; 212 in the Bailey School; 596 in the high school building; and 26 in the opportunity classroom.


EVANSVILLE, Ind. - A son was born Wednesday afternoon to Mr. and Mrs. T. Fletcher Ellis at a hospital in Evansville. The child has been named Thomas Fletcher Jr. Before her marriage, Mrs. Ellis was Miss Evelyn Allard, daughter of Mrs. Lacy Allard, who is in Evansville with her daughter.

SIKESTON - Rex Allen, star of the 10th annual Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo, stopped to pose with Little Mr. Western Glen Bridges, 8, and Little Miss Western Beverly Anne Wirth, 2, after the youngsters had been selected for titles.

NEW MADRID - In an effort to consolidate the New Madrid County Central High School physically as well as in the name, the New Madrid County R-1 Board of Education will ask voters to approve a $2 million bond issue in November.

CHARLESTON - The City Council denied early reinstatement of the liquor by the drink license for the Old Timer's Club on West Marshall Street - a license suspended following an administrative hearing July 21 due to multiple violations on the premises.


SIKESTON - As Sikeston Public Schools began to see light at the end of the economic tunnel, a drop in student enrollment has dealt another blow. The number of students enrolled at the school fell to 4,310 from last year's 4,437.
