Looking Back in Time at Sept. 6

Friday, September 6, 2002

SIKESTON - Three hundred and twenty-nine students enrolled in high school during the regular registration days last week. Late registrants are expected to swell the number this Monday. Principal Tharon E. Stallings said the total registered in each class were: senior, 68; junior, 78; sophomore, 87; and freshman, 96.

SIKESTON - Joe Bean, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bean of Sikeston, left today for Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., where he will enroll as a freshman in the Medill School of Journalism.

SIKESTON - Nine sophomores and one junior at Sikeston High School expressed opinions in the new driver's education program offered by the school system this year. The program was previously taught as part of the regular curriculum, but was discontinued for this year by the Board of Education, due to the high yearly cost to the system - $40,000.

NEW MADRID - The New Madrid County R-1 Enlarged School District will host its fourth annual College Vocational Night Sept. 21 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the New Madrid County Central High School east campus.

SIKESTON - Most parents look forward to helping children learn to ride a bicycle. Unfortunately, many parents fail to enforce the importance of bicycle safety in the learning process. Sikeston Department of Public Safety Officer Shirley Porter reported that approximately 10 moderate bicycle injuries occurred locally this year. One bicycle-related fatality occurred two years ago. Although Sikeston does not have a bicycle ordinance, Porter said there could be one if there was enough interest.
