Dexter spoils home opener for Sikeston tennis team

SIKESTON -- Sikeston lost its first home tennis match on Wednesday, falling to Dexter 9-0.

"We played hard, even though some of the scores don't show it," said Sikeston coach Lynne DeWitt. "We played a very experienced team full of seniors. They outplayed us on experience. We had many matches that were very good."

In varsity singles, Dexter's Amy Rose defeated Sikeston's Elizabeth Killion 8-5 in the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, Dexter's Rhiannon Wunderlich edged Sikeston's Lindsay Leible, 8-6. At No. 3, Dexter's Elise Young blanked Sikeston's Charlie Richey 8-0. In the fourth spot, Dexter's Amanda Ward defeated Sikeston's Jeri Nichols 8-6. At No. 5, Dexter's Briana Lacy beat Sikeston's Chelsea Gilliland 8-3. In the sixth spot, Dexter's Summer Carter handled Sikeston's Jamie Davidson, 8-1.

In varsity doubles, Wunderlich and Young topped Killion and Leible, 8-5. Rose and Ward defeated Richey and Nichols 8-2, then Lacy and Carter beat Gilliland and Davidson, 8-5. Dexter also won the junior varsity match, 9-0.

In junior varsity singles, Dexter's Molly Jarrell handled Sikeston's Hallie Lambert, 6-1. Dexter's Brittney Bagby swept Sikeston's Jessica Colwick 6-0. Dexter's Megan Busch topped Sikeston's Lindsey James 6-1.

Dexter's Tery Christian shut out Sikeston's Brittney Bohannon 6-0.

Dexter's Claire Critchlow defeated Sikeston's Emily Bowman, then Dexter's Megan Leist beat Sikeston's Katie Ralph, 6-1. In junior varsity doubles, Wicker and Jackson beat Lambert and Colwick, 6-2. Kinchen and Ward defeated James and Bohannon 6-2, then Watkins and Horton defeated Bowman and Ralph, 6-1.

Sikeston (1-1) will host Caruthersville today at 4 p.m.
