Several schools in Southeast Missouri add new coaches for 2003-04 season

SIKESTON - The 2003-2004 high school sports year officially kicks off tomorrow with fall sports practice. Several new faces will be on the sidelines, leading area teams this upcoming year. Here is a look at coaching changes around Southeast Missouri:

In varsity softball, Steve Drake will be an assistant coach to Jenny Hobeck.

In boys basketball, former Twin Rivers coach Scott Kruse takes over head coaching duties for David Fields. Currently, there is no replacement for golf coach Sherry Copeland, who left for Caruthersville.

At Charleston, Nancy Burgard will take over as head volleyball coach, replacing Amanda Broshuis.

At East Prairie, Brett Blackman takes over for Ken Latham as head football coach. Yancy Temple will also replace Steve Stokes as head girls basketball coach. Former Oak Ridge basketball coach Paul Lynch will be the school's athletic director.

At Oran, Jim Gloth has been promoted to head basketball coach, taking over for longtime coach Mitch Wood. Former player Travis Friga will be his assistant coach. Gloth will also be head coach of the track and field team, taking over for Mark Geuring.

In boys basketball, former Parma coach Doyle Denbow replaces Chance White. He will be assisted by Steve Wyman.

At Portageville, Terri Taylor will replace superintendent Kerwin Urhahn, who was interim volleyball coach last season.

At Bell City, Erin Hoffman is replacing Carl Ritter as head volleyball coach.

At Chaffee, Terry Brashers is replacing Alan Horrell as head football coach. Brian Horrell takes over for David Mirly as head boys basketball coach. Tyson Moyers takes over for Tammy Brock as head girls basketball coach. In volleyball, Shaun Nix replaces Mirly. Athletic director Terry Glenzy will coach the boys and girls track and field teams.

There are no new coaching changes at Scott Central, but new principal Delane Beckwith, the former Clarkton coach, might be helping out with the boys basketball team this season.

At Dexter, Terry Hester will replace Corey Mouser as an assistant football coach.

In Jackson, Sam Sides takes over as head girls basketball coach, replacing the legendary Ron Cook. Shelia Midgett will be Sides' assistant.

In baseball, Rex Crosnoe takes over head coaching duties from Sides.

At Hayti, former coach Jerry Bethune returns to coach the football team, taking over for David Gilmore.

Bethune's assistant coaches will be Joey Watkins, Scott Long and Roy Williams.

In boys basketball, Sylvester James takes over for Bill Tyer. His assistants will be Philip Taylor and Kevin Kalich.

Alberta Cooper will coach the volleyball team and will be assisted by Faith Jones.

In football, former Caruthersville coach Jackie Johnson takes over for Jason Burkman. In boys basketball, former player Lance Amick is now head coach, replacing Kerry Thompson.

In football, former Hayti coach David Gilmore replaces Jackie Johnson as head coach. Former Hayti offensive coordinator Shaun Jackson will be one of his assistants.

In girls basketball, Cathy Brummitt replaces Cindy Chronister as assistant coach. Boys basketball assistant Jim Vaughn left to coach Twin Rivers. Volleyball coach Chandra Pierce has also stepped down.

In football, Britt Mirgeaux is a new assistant coach. Erin Shephard will assist softball head coach Amy Blattel and Jason Banderman will be an assistant for cross country head coach Mark Hahn. Maile Gannon is the new head volleyball coach and Nicole Rhinehart will be her assistant.

In football, former NMCC coach Ronnie Jones takes over for Roland Johnson as head coach.

In boys basketball, Bob Brown will be an assistant coach.

In baseball, Jason Long replaces Barry Beacham as head coach.

In boys basketball, former Poplar Bluff assistant Jim Vaughn replaces Scott Kruse as head coach.

In basketball, former Delta coach Robert Stein takes over for Paul Lynch. In baseball, Jason Niswonger replaces Michael Qualls as head coach. Volleyball coach Kami Green and softball coach Blu Decker have also stepped down. Their replacements haven't been found at this time.

In softball, Jeff Graviett will take over head coaching duties for Chris Janet. His assistant coach will be Tim Garner. Jerry Grim will also replace Janet as the head golf coach. Darrin Scott is the school's new athletic director.

In softball, Scott Crabtree will take over for Laura Brown as head coach. John Webber will be his assistant. In basketball, former player Shawn Kinder replaces Robert Stein as head coach.

No changes were reported at the following schools: Kelly, Woodland, Senath-Hornersville, Bernie, Leopold and Puxico.
