Summer vacation comes to an end for area students

SIKESTON - Ready or not, here they come.

For many area students and teachers, this week marks the end of summer vacation and the beginning of classes.

Scott County Central students will get a preview of their school year Tuesday during an open house for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The open house will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a full day of classes scheduled on Wednesday.

Several new staff members have joined the district including new high school principal Delane Beckwith.

The Oran School District's open house for students and parents is also slated for Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Classes will begin Thursday for the 2003-04 school year.

Sikeston R-6 teachers are back in their classrooms making preparations for opening day but students can enjoy one more week away from classes set to start Aug. 20.

There will be a full day of classes for students on Aug. 21 in the Kelly School District when school resumes for the 2003-04 year. Elementary, middle school and high school students and their parents can get a preview of the coming year during an open house from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 19.

"It is always exciting when school starts again," said Principal Tom Hulshof. "We look forward to students coming back and to helping them get their education."

An open house is planned for students in the Chaffee School District from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday; classes start Aug. 18.

Teachers in the Charleston School District will return for workshops on Aug. 18 and 19, with students slated for a full day of classes on Aug. 20.

Returning students will notice a few facility renovations on their return as well as new faces greeting them including a new superintendent, Kevin Miller. Miller actually may be familiar to many of the students having served for seven years as the district's band director and 10 years as the middle school principal. For the past seven years, he has worked with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a field representative before taking his new post.

East Prairie students will return for classes on Aug. 20 but can get a preview of their year along with their parents during an open house set for all buildings from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 19. Teachers will begin work on Aug. 18 with orientation.

Classes in the Gideon school district will begin Thursday with an open house to welcome new and returning students beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Students in the New Madrid County R-1 School District will return to school for a full day of classes on Friday.

New students to the R-1 District who have not pre-enrolled classes yet may continue to do so from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Tuesday in the principal's office of each elementary school and New Madrid County Central Middle School. New students who have not pre-enrolled by Tuesday will not be allowed to begin school until Aug. 18.

Open houses are planned at all the district's schools with the New Madrid County Central High School faculty set to welcome students and parents beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Central Middle School open house begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 19 while each of the elementary schools will have an open house beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 21.

While few changes were made within in the district during the summer, Dr. Mike Barnes, superintendent, noted the district is establishing an alternative school this year for students with discipline problems or special needs.

There will be a half day of classes for Portageville School District students when school doors open Friday. Students can get a peek at their classrooms on Thursday when fifth graders can report for orientation from 5:30-6 p.m. and an open house is set for all other students from 6-7:30 p.m.

When students return for a full day of classes in the Risco School District on Friday they will notice a general face lift to the building with the classrooms repainted and the gym floor redone. An open house for kindergarten students will be conducted Thursday. The date for open house for the other students has not been announced, however.

Students attending Richland R-1 Elementary School will have their first day of school on Thursday. Classes begin at 8 a.m. and students will have a full day of classes on the first day.

Elementary students and parents will be welcomed back with an open house from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday. An open house for the high school will be announced at a later date.
