CALIFORNIA, Mo. - The Rev. J.W. Wilkerson, 66, formerly of Sikeston, died Nov. 4, 2003, at his home.
Born Nov. 26, 1936, in Bragg City, son of the late James William Lester and Arlie Aldora Smith Wilkerson, he was a bishop of the Church of God of Prophecy. He served as pastor of the Church of God Prophecy in California from 1983-95, where he was also a member. Other pastorates included churches in Missouri from 1973-83 and he served as district overseer of the Church of God Prophecy and was a former president of the California Ministerial Alliance. Wilkerson served with the U.S. Army for three years and was president of the California Kiwanis Club in 2002.
On Oct. 19, 1958, in Bell City, he married Shelby Jean Eskew who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: four sons and two daughters-in-law, James Edward and Marla Wilkerson and Timothy Allen Wilkerson of California, David Dewayne Wilkerson of Memphis, Tenn., and Clifford Gene and Robin Wilkerson of Lapeer, Mich.; two brothers, Lonnie Wilkerson of Arkansas and Clyde Wilkerson of Kokomo, Ind.; two sisters, Devonia Julian of Marion, Ind., and Ernestine Bruist of Kokomo; and 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were three brothers, Ernest Wilkerson, Lloyd Wilkerson and Buel Wilkerson; and three sisters, Irene Wilkerson, Millie Wilkerson and Elizabeth Wilkerson; and other infant brothers and sisters.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home in California where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. John Pace will officiate assisted by the Rev. Gerald Taylor and his brother-in-law, the Rev. Jim Eskew.
Burial will follow in the California City Cemetery.
