SIKESTON - Work on the new soybean oil mill, which is being built by the Sikeston Cotton Oil Mill on Highway 25 east of Kennett, was reported progressing rapidly this week.

SIKESTON - Clell Gilbert, Jon Don Acres, Sikeston, was one of the 44 thirty-second degree Masons selected for the rank of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor Scottish Rite Masons i the biennial session of the Supreme Council in St. Louis.

BENTON - A marijuana patch was discovered Friday and destroyed by Scott County deputy sheriffs, according to Sheriff Bill Ferrell. The patch, located along St. John's Ditch, was overgrown with weeds and the patch yielded 54 plants up to four feet tall.

SIKESTON - Large white blocks stand like sentries at the end of cotton fields. Machinery at local cotton gins whir day and night. But despite the activity, the Bootheel's cotton crop will fall far below 1992's record level. Locally, officials estimate the cotton crop will be down as much as 100 pounds per acre from last year. Nationally the crop is estimated at 86 pounds below the 1992 per acre average. "Of course, last year was near record levels," said Mike Milam, agronomy specialist for the University of Missouri Extension. The quality is down too. The summer of 1993 played havoc with the crop.

SIKESTON - Members of the Sikeston Junior High School Student Council prepared for Red Ribbon Week by vowing to be drug free. Numerous activities are planned throughout the week at the local elementary and secondary schools.
