CHARLESTON - Helen Louise Ponder, 70, died at 11:47 a.m. Aug. 21, 2003, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
Born Dec. 9, 1932, in Canalou, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Delphia Pierce Elderbrook. A graduate of Arkansas State University at Jonesboro, she was a school teacher in Arizona, Oklahoma and Mississippi before returning to Missouri. She was a teacher with the Charleston R-1 School District for many years before retiring. A member of the First Baptist Church in Charleston, where she was active in the choir, she was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association and past member of the Women's Improvement Club in East Prairie and Charleston Business and Professional Women's Club.
Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Rudy and Mary Susan Ponder of Sikeston and John and Sammie Ponder of East Prairie; one sister, Gwen Falkner of Jerseyville, Ill.; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Elderbrook; and two sisters, Betty Campbell and Gloria Chipman.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at McMikle Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Gerald Collier, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Charleston and the Rev. Fred Girdwood, pastor of the First Christian Church of East Prairie, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery near East Prairie.
Pallbearers will be: Sam Babb, Milas Mainord, Jimmy Aters, Steve Waggoner, Bob Graham and Bill Ponder.
