MOUNDS, Ill. -- The Charleston Bluejays scored 11 first-inning runs on the way to an 18-3 romp over Meridian in a non-conference baseball game on Monday.
Charleston (7-5), with only four hits in the inning, took advantage of wildness by the Meridian starter who hit five batters and walked four.
The Bluejays' A. H. Marshall (1-0) went the distance and picked up the win in the five-inning run-rule contest. Marshall allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out seven and walked five.
Leading Charleston's 13-hit attack was Travis McCann, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Marcus Dixon, the RBI leader with three, and Rett Thompson collected two hits each, while Bobby Clark, Josh Thompson, Tyler Collier an Nathan Pullen chipped in with one hit apiece.
GIDEON - The New Madrid County Central softball team improved to 4-2 on the season with a 14-4, five-inning victory against Gideon on Monday.
Relief pitcher Katie Denton picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of work. She allowed two hits and one walk with a strikeout.
Autumn Walker started and lasted 3 2/3 innings. She allowed two hits and six walks with four strikeouts.
Ashley Wrather led the Lady Eagles with two hits each. Amelia Porter, Laura Carter and Mallory Jones each had one hit.
