CHARLESTON - The Sikeston tennis team fell to 4-2 on the season with a 7-2 loss at Charleston on Tuesday.
Sikeston's Nos. 1 and 2 singles players Elizabeth Killion and Lindsay Leible provided the Lady Bulldogs' only wins.
Killion beat Megan Leuhmann 8-5 and Leible beat Laura Burton 8-2.
"Elizabeth had an excellent match," said Sikeston head coach Lynne DeWitt. "Lindsay keeps playing hard. She never gives up. She's a fighter."
The rest of the matches went Charleston's way.
Claire Showmaker beat Charlie Richey 8-0; Kamyia Sager beat Jeri Nichols 8-6; Kara True beat Chelsea Gilliland 8-6; and Lauren Smith beat Jessica Colwick 8-1.
"Charleston has an excellent team," said DeWitt. "They all play with such intensity. We had some good matches that could've gone either way."
In doubles, Leuhmann and Showmaker beat Killion and Leible 8-5; Sager and True beat Richey and Nichols 8-6; and Smith and Burton beat Gilliland and Colwick 8-3.
"We're extremely pleased with the win," said Charleston head coach Mitch Baker. "So many of those matches could've gone either way. We feel fortunate to win. We knew when the season started that Sikeston would be one of, if not, the top team around here with all their seniors coming back. I was real proud of the win."
Charleston (6-1) will host Cape Central on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Sikeston will host Caruthersville on Thursday at 4 p.m.
In junior varsity, Charleston beat Sikeston 5-2.
Sikeston won both doubles matches. Brittney Bohannon and Emily Bowman were winners as was the team of Lindsey James and Hallie Lambert.
Charleston swept the singles matches as Mandy Shankle, Ashley Shands, Kati Leuhmann, Jessie Duenne and Rebecca Rolwing all claimed victories.
