Former Sikeston mayor dies

SIKESTON -- Prominent Sikeston architect Charles Robert Stearnes died Nov. 25, 2003, at his home in Sikeston. He was 67.

Born March 14, 1936, in Sikeston, son of the late Charles and Helen Stearnes, he had practiced architecture in Sikeston since 1960 and founded Robert Stearnes Associates in 1982. A member of the First United Methodist Church, he served on the administrative board, building and grounds committee and the new building committee. He was a member of Sikeston City Council for nine years, serving as mayor in 1985; served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for 12 years, the Sikeston Housing Authority Board of Commissioners for six years, the Board of Directors for the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce for four years, and was named man of the year in 1982.

On June 24, 1956, he married Joan Hill who preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2000.

One brother, Bill Stearnes, also preceded him in death in October 2002.

Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Alan and Betty Stearnes of Cape Girardeau and Charles David and Laura Stearnes of Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren, Dustin Stearnes and Tyler Stearnes of Dallas, Texas, and Danny Stearnes and Amanda Stearnes of Houston.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Koch, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Anton "Tony" Sebek, Lee Shell, Ralph Stone, Wayne Rowland, Phil Boyer and Mike Couch.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Lee Bowman, Galen Kruger Sr., Craig Pinnell, Rick Adams, Rob Mitchell and Jim Clay.
