SIKESTON - The Sikeston 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars advanced to the second round of the Missouri State Tournament on Thursday with a convincing 12-2, five-inning victory against Marshall at VFW Stadium.

Sikeston posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as three pitchers combined to allow only three Marshall hits.

"They played pretty good tonight," said Sikeston coach Dave Strom. "I'm real proud of our kids. We hit the ball really well tonight. Our pitchers were great. All these teams in this tournament have one tournament to get here, so they're all quality teams. We didn't know anything about Marshall other than they had some big wins against Chillicothe in their district. We had to be prepared for anything and we put a good game on them. It was an impressive win."

Sikeston tacked on two more runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Marshall was able to plate a couple runs in the top of the third to cut it to 5-2, but Sikeston pushed the lead even further in the bottom half of the inning with five more runs.

Sikeston scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the 10-run mercy rule.

Logan Kirkpatrick was the winning pitcher with two-plus innings of work.

He struck out three and didn't allow a hit before leaving with an injury after walking the first batter of the third inning.

Vince Howard and Stuart Strom were able to keep Marshall at bay the rest of the way.

The three pitchers combined for seven strikeouts and three walks.

"Logan was injured when he got hit by a pitch earlier in the game so we had to take him out," said Strom. "He really started off and really pitched well, but unfortunately he had to come out. Vince Howard and Stuart Strom had to pick up the slack and they shut them down. They've done this a couple times. They come in and have given us some good innings. They came through again tonight."

Sikeston's top three hitters in the batting order provided the most damage at the plate.

Leadoff batter Darin Dicus walked three times, stole three bases and scored three runs.

Howard was collected two hits, including an RBI-triple, with three runs scored.

Timmy Hart had two hits, two RBIs and three stolen bases.

"There's a lot of marks on this scorebook for those three guys at the top of the lineup," said Strom. "They got on base and scored a lot of runs for us. They led the team tonight."

Others that contributed were Blair Bohannon (single, 2 RBIs), Zach Howard (single, runs scored), Jake Pewitt (single, RBI), Strom (single, run scored), Stephen Beydler (single, run scored) and Jarod Brooks (single, run scored).

Sikeston plays Lebanon today at noon. Lebanon defeated Washington 12-4.

Also on Thursday, Mineral Area defeated Dexter and Aurora defeated Booneville.

Marshall will play Washington today at 4 p.m.
