HAYTI -- A van overturned near Hayti early Monday resulting in the fatality of one Illinois resident and seven others injured. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at 6:50 a.m., Irma Moreno, 35, of Chicago, Ill., was traveling southbound in Pemiscot County on Interstate 55, six miles north of Hayti when she ran her van off the left side of the roadway into the median. Moreno then overcorrected, ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Passengers Jose Moreno, 37, of Chicago and Manuel Hernandez, 67, of Chicago were ejected from the vehicle.
Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene at 7 a.m. by Pemiscot County coroner Jim Brimhall. Hernandez was taken to the Pemiscot County Morgue.
Irma Moreno and her husband, Jose Moreno, received serious injuries and were air evacuated to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Passengers Lorenza Moreno, 65; Graciela Moreno, 10; Alicia Moreno, 10; and Reyna Moreno, 3, all of Chicago sustained serious injuries. Lorenza Moreno was taken by ambulance to Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital in Hayti while Graciela, Alicia and Reyna Moreno were air evacuated to Lebonheur Hospital in Memphis. Six-year-old Gabriel Moreno received minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital.
