BENTON - The combination of rising election costs, upcoming changes in voter laws and the Sikeston Home Rule Charter will result in some changes at the polls.
"Several Scott County voting precincts will be consolidated for future elections," Scott County Clerk Rita Milam said.
In April 2002, Sikeston voters approved a Charter which established four wards. With the establishment of wards, some precinct boundaries had to be changed to match ward boundaries.
"Finding polling places is not an easy task," Milam said. "There are state and federal rules that must be followed. Using churches and other community centers as polling precincts is helpful because they already meet the handicap accessibility guidelines and most people know where these buildings are."
The Clayton and Sunset precincts will vote at the West End Missionary Baptist Church on 1004 Maude St.
Precincts that were combined earlier include the Allen and Northwest precincts which vote at the Trinity Gospel Church on Davis Street, and the Delmar and Armory precincts which vote at the First Assembly of God Church Recreation Center.
Elsewhere in the county, the Crowder precinct will be consolidated with the Vanduser precinct and voters will cast their ballots at the Vanduser City Hall.
"The costs of elections have increased over the last several years and with the scheduled changes in voter laws in the future, the costs will only be higher," Milam said. "More precincts throughout the county will also be combined in the future in an attempt to save taxpayers' money."
