Thursday, January 15, 2004

POPLAR BLUFF -- Sikeston's ninth grade basketball team lost its first game of the Poplar Bluff Tournament on Wednesday night, falling 58-43 to the host Mules.

The Bulldogs were outscored 13-8 in the first quarter, 15-5 in the second and 16-9 in the third. Sikeston rallied in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 15.

"We had a good gameplan going in," said Sikeston coach Chris Sarakas. "The boys did exactly what we expected. Our shots just didn't fall and their shots did. That was the difference in the game."

The Bulldogs were led by Joe Moore with 13 points. Julian Beard scored 10 and Blake Taylor contributed nine.

For Poplar Bluff, Bryant scored 11. Sikeston (4-5) will face Dexter tonight in the tournament at 5 p.m.
