LILBOURN - Authorities have identified the body discovered in a business destroyed by fire.
New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens reported today the victim of the fire was Larry Scallion. Scallion was an employee of Twitty Farm Equipment, which was destroyed by a fire discovered at 8:15 p.m. Friday.
The business, located at 600 North Highway D in Lilbourn, was destroyed by the blaze. As fire personnel searched through the debris Saturday morning, Scallion's body was discovered.
According to the sheriff, Scallion was staying alone inside a camping trailer in the building.
"The cause of death by all indications shows smoke inhalation," said Stevens, who added the New Madrid County coroner's office hasn't decided whether an autopsy is to be conducted.
The sheriff added the State Fire Marshal's office was called in to investigate the fatal fire. "It was an old building with a lot of flammables and combustibles in it, the Fire Marshal's office said they couldn't determine the cause," he said.
