POPLAR BLUFF -- Wind nor cold can cool the red-hot Sikeston golf team this season. The Bulldogs won their third consecutive match on Thursday, toppling their biggest rival, Poplar Bluff, on the road, 163-172.
"The Bluff Ozark course is always a challenge," said Sikeston coach Rick Oetting. "When the temperature and wind are both in the 30s it's an even greater challenge. We always enjoy beating the Mules on their home course. I hope we can keep up the good work Monday in the Notre Dame Invitational."
Senior Brandon DeWitt and freshman E.C. Atchison led the charge for the Bulldogs, each firing a 39. Jonathan Spence made his return from illness and checked in with a 41. Tanner Fritz followed up his two medalist rounds with a 44 to round out the scoring for Sikeston.
Ben Brummitt paced Poplar Bluff with a 38, followed by Adam Hutson at 42, Jake Robertson at 44 and Ryan Hedrix at 48.
Sikeston also won the junior varsity match, 198-201. Posting scores for Sikeston were Matt Hon (45), Zach Bell (50), Martin Schaefer (50) and Ed Pike (53).
