CAPE GIRARDEAU - Four runners from Sikeston were medalists in the 12-team Cape Central Invitational held Saturday.
Leading the group of Sikeston medalists was Matt Rushing, finishing 2nd in a field of 60 runners in the freshman division.
Rushing ran the 3.1 mile course in a personal best time of 19.36.
At the 2-mile mark in the race, Rushing and five other runners were running together.
Rushing made a strong move to the front and was able to move away from four of the runners but was caught by Sam Masters of Jackson in the closing stages of the race. Masters time was 19.26.
In the girls 7th and 8th grade division Tyanna Townsend and Frankasia Howard continue to excel.
On the 1.6 mile course Tyanna finished 5th in 11.40 and Frankasia finished 9th in 11.52. This is the third straight race that these two girls have been medalists.
The fourth medalist for Sikeston was Traci Jackson in the girl's junior varsity race. Traci finished 5th in a personal best time of 24.14.
"Traci showed a lot of guts during the race because she was sick the night before," said Sikeston coach Gary Williams. "Many girls would not have even tried to run but Traci not only tried but ran a personal best time."
Sikeston's next race will be October 2 at the Notre Dame Invitational.
