SIKESTON - It might be awhile before Eddie Cantrell decides to go swimming again. The 16-year-old Sikeston resident nearly drowned Friday evening after sinking to the bottom of the Virginia Pines swimming pool, where he remained for a little over a minute. Fortunately for him, three women were nearby who knew what to do. Tricia Syre, Tonya Noppert and Julie Thrower rescued Cantrell, who was apparently standing in the pool when he suddenly slid underwater. He then came up, gasped for air, went back under and didn't resurface. The women began CPR, which they continued until paramedics arrived at the scene.

EAST PRAIRIE - Casey Robison, 7-year-old daughter of Tammy Robison and Mark Robison of Sikeston, was chosen Miss Petite Sweetcorn during the Sweetcorn Festival over the Fourth of July in East Prairie. Named first runner-up was Claire Secoy, 7-year-old daughter of Steve and Dot Secoy of East Prairie and second runner-up was Jerica Henderson, 7, daughter of Jerry and Pam Henderson of East Prairie.
