Big inning lifts Cape past Sikeston

Wednesday, September 10, 2003

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston's softball team suffered a 5-0 road loss to Cape Central on Tuesday, allowing all five runs in the second inning.

"It was defensive errors again," said Sikeston coach Jenny Hobeck. "We gave them seven or eight outs in that inning. That really cost us."

Molly Brinkmeyer pitched for Sikeston, allowing six hits and one walk with one strikeout. The Lady Bulldogs had just two hits with singles from Paige Silverthorn and Jessica Owens. For Cape Central, Scott City transfer Shana Wadlington picked up the win, allowing two hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. She also led the Lady Tigers offensively with two RBIs.

"After that second inning, we played really good defense," said Hobeck. "We just couldn't get the bats going. (Wadlington) is a good pitcher, and Cape has got a good defense."

Cape improves to 6-4 with the win, while Sikeston falls to 2-5. The Lady Bulldogs will host Kelly today at 4 p.m.

In Tuesday's junior varsity game, Cape Central beat Sikeston 7-5. Paige Silverthorn pitched three innings for the Lady Bulldogs, allowing one hit with three strikeouts. Blurton threw the rest of the game, giving up one hit with three Ks.

Silverthorn paced the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Other hits came from Barbara Hobbs, Jessica Jackson and Ally Friend.
