SENATH - The top-seeded Portageville Bulldogs moved on in the Class 2A, District 1 Tournament at Senath on Monday, defeating the host team 57-26 in the first round.
The Bulldogs (23-3) trailed 12-10 after one quarter but regrouped to lead 24-12 at halftime, shutting out the Lions in the second quarter.
"In the second quarter we stepped it up defensively," said Portageville head coach Jim Bidewell "We didn't shoot real well tonight and we kind of looked sluggish. But we had much better defensive intensity after the first quarter."
Portageville still led 33-21 entering the fourth quarter before blowing the Lions away with a 24-5 run in the final frame.
"We really didn't get it going in the third quarter but you have to credit Senath," said Bidewell. "Their kids played hard. It wasn't so much that we played badly, but they made us work for a lot of things."
Portageville was led by Jordan French's 12 points and Eric Booker's 10 points.
Skelton led Senath-Hornersville (5-17) with eight points.
Portageville will play the winner of the Malden-Hayti game on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
In other District 1 action, No. 2 seed Twin Rivers defeated South Pemiscot 78-27.
