SIKESTON - A six pound daughter was born Wednesday to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Nichols.

SIKESTON - John Ponder, a sophomore at Southeast Missouri Teachers College at Cape Girardeau, was elected president of the Young Men's Christian Association at the college last week.

NEW MADRID - County recipients of assistance from the various funds disbursed by the New Madrid County Welfare Office for the month of January wee paid a total of $191,438 with the greatest part of that amount going to those on Old Age Assistance list of the welfare agency.

SIKESTON - CP Board Chairman Kenny Bridger is calling for local talent to perform on the second annual CP Telethon April 3-4 at the Malone Theater. Audition deadline is Feb. 20.

CHAFFEE - A merger of Chaffee and Delta public schools has been suggested by a four-month study. Backers say it would enhance the educational opportunities for students.

SIKESTON - Thus far, the 1990s have been dismal for the majority of Missouri public schools, all of whom have faced a severe loss of funding in the last two years. Very much to the financial difficulties facing school districts, Dr. Robert Buchanan, superintendent of Sikeston Schools, vowed to the Sikeston R-6 School Board Tuesday evening that he would make the Sikeston Public School Foundation one of his top priorities. The trust was created in 1990.
