At both of the tournaments, the finals finished in a tie after regulation.
At the Tournament of Roses in Cape Girardeau, the 'Bees were tied with Little Rock FC Blue going into the penalty kicks. Jordi Ferrell took the forth PK and placed it out of the goalies reach for the deciding goal. To get to the finals they overcame other regional powers, JB Marine, Memphis FC, and Norco.
During the St. Louis Invitational, hosted by Metro FC, the 'Bees allowed only one goal in four games. Coach Justin McMullen set his team in a defensive mode after they scored first in two of the four weekend games.
The lone goal came in the third game at the 57 minute mark, in a 60-minute match, against a powerful Busch team. With that loss, it allowed the Busch club to reach the finals. The 'Bees had already qualified for the championship by beating an Iowa Olympic Development Program team and Avon, from Indiana.
And once again the score was tied after regulation, on to PK's. During this set of PK's, the Bumblebees needed all five kicks to win, but two were blocked by the diving goalie from the Busch Squad.
Busch won the match 3-2 on penalty kicks. The Bumblebees came away with second place and another great weekend of hard fought soccer. Still on tap for the SMSC Bumblebees are the National Club Championships coming up in July, where they will face the toughest competition yet. The team members include: Lauren Drewett, Tierra Walker, Jordi Ferrell, Bobbi Jo Schlick, Jodi Urhahn, Hailey Pilsner, Megan Davidson, Chelsey Dale, Heather Diesher, Kaitlyn Turnbow, Jessica Holloway, Christin Jones, Lindsay Poole, Laura Lusk, and Abby Keifner.
Justin McMullen is the head coach and a SMSC trainer.
