SIKESTON - The Sikeston 14-year-old all-stars advanced to the semifinals with a 10-0, five-inning victory against Mississippi County on Thursday in the Missouri State Tournament at VFW Stadium.

Sikeston jumped in the lead early in the game and was never threatened.

Three Sikeston pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout, including 11 strikeouts.

"We're real proud of these young men," said Sikeston coach Ken Dicus. "We're happy to have the first game under our belts. Now we're ready to see what the rest of the week brings."

Sikeston's Logan Gilmore was the winning pitcher as he threw three innings, allowing one hit with eight strikeouts, including five straight at one point.

Tim Hart and Caleb Davidson each threw one shutout inning of relief.

"Our pitchers threw well, especially Logan," said Dicus. "Seven strikeouts in three innings -- we're really tickled with that kind of performance. Plus we got a chance to get some other pitchers some work."

Sikeston rattled the bats for 10 hits, including five doubles. And when they weren't collecting hits, Mississippi County had trouble fielding the ball as they committed four errors.

Sikeston also stole five bases in the game.

"We really got a chance to use our speed on the bases," said Dicus.

Sikeston got going in the first inning as Charlie Bohannon reached on an error and then promptly stole second and third base. He then scored on a double by Hart. Hart then scored on a Zach Howard single.

Sikeston extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the third inning. Hart had another run-scoring double to bring in Bohannon. Hart and Howard both eventually scored on errors.

Sikeston put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth with three more runs. Ethan Lee doubled down the third base line to bring in two runs.

Howard's ground out RBI brought in Lee.

Sikeston enforced the 10-run rule in the top of the fifth. Davidson singled home Jake Pewitt, who doubled. Bohannon's ground out RBI brought in Stephen Beydler, who had singled.

Bohannon was 2-4 with three runs and an RBI. Hart was 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs.

Sikeston plays Mineral Area today at noon in the semifinals.
