Sikeston wins conference tourney

Thursday, September 12, 2002

SIKESTON -- Sikeston won the SEMO Conference volleyball tournament on Wednesday, beating Scott City in the championship game 15-7, 6-15, 15-9.

"It has been a long time since Sikeston has won the tournament," said Sikeston coach Steve Beydler. "This was our second goal this year. Our first goal was to beat Bernie, and our second goal was to win our conference tournament. With it being hosted by us in the Field House, we really didn't want to walk away with anything less than a win. It was not easy. Every team we played was on their game when they faced us."

The tournament began with pool play on Monday. Teams in the red pool were Sikeston, Oran and Cape Central.

In the first pool game, Sikeston split with Oran, losing the first set 6-15 and winning the second 15-9.

"Oran's got a good team," said Beydler. "They are very good defensively, and they just keep the ball coming back at you."

In the other red pool match, Oran split with Cape Central, losing the first set 14-16 and winning the second 15-5. In the third red pool match, Sikeston defeated Cape Central 15-8, 15-2 to win the pool.

"We were a little sluggish in the beginning, but then we got rolling real good," said Beydler. "The setters were laying it up and the hitters were getting the ball down."

Oran came in second in the red pool and Cape took third. The black pool consisted of NMCC, Scott City and Chaffee. In the first pool match, Scott City defeated NMCC 15-5, 15-1. In the second black pool match, NMCC defeated Chaffee 15-4, 15-2.

In the third one, Scott City defeated Chaffee 15-8, 15-2, to place first in the black pool. NMCC took second and Chaffee finished in third.

The first and second place teams from each pool advanced to bracket play on Wednesday, with the No. 1 team from each pool facing the No. 2 team from the other pool.

In the first match of the night, Sikeston defeated NMCC 15-12, 15-5.

"New Madrid County has a good ballclub," said Beydler. "We were very sluggish, and were fortunate to pull that game out 15-12. The girls got it going again (in the second set) and played like they're capable of playing."

In Wednesday's second match, Scott City defeated Oran 15-13, 15-5. In the third place game, Oran defeated NMCC in three sets, 8-15, 15-7, 16-14.

Sikeston then ended the tournament by beating Scott City in the championship, 15-7, 6-15, 15-9.

"That was a tough fight," said Beydler. "It was a very long two nights. I'm glad it's over and I'm glad we came back with the first place plaque."

Sikeston (4-0-1) will compete in the SEMO University Volleyball Classic this weekend. They will face Jackson in pool play on Saturday at 5 p.m.
