CHAFFEE -- Scott City's softball team posted an impressive win on Wednesday, handing Chaffee its first loss of the season in convincing fashion, 14-5.
"It was a very good win for us," said Scott City coach Sally O'Brien. "Hopefully this will be a confidence builder for us. We really came out hitting the ball well. I think that was the big key in winning the game."
That and a dominating performance from sophomore standout pitcher Shana Wadlington, who picked up the complete-game win.
She held Chaffee's potent lineup to just four earned runs on four hits and five walks. She took 11 batters down via strikeout.
"I thought Shana threw a very good ballgame," said Chaffee coach Mark Devenport. "We faced her three times last year, and she has really matured as a pitcher. She did a very good job on the mound. Scott City as a whole really executed well."
Scott City plated three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Every member of the team got a hit in the victory.
Megan Ressel was 4-for-5. Sidney Baer, Britne Amick and Rachael Noon were all 2-for-4. Wadlington, Emily Miller, Kyla Smith, Amanda O'Brien and Audrey Heisserer also contributed hits.
"Not only did we lose this one, Scott City took it to us pretty good," said Devenport. "How we deal with this and move on next week is going to be a big key."
Chaffee ace Shannon Hampton was charged with her first loss, giving up 11 hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings of work. Abby Walter threw the final 1 2/3 innings for the Lady Devils, giving up two hits and two walks.
At the plate, Kate Pfefferkorn led the charge for Chaffee, batting 2-for-3. Mallory Kiefer, Hampton and Walter also had hits.
Scott City (3-2-1) will travel to Portageville today at 4 p.m. Chaffee (5-1) will host Portageville on Monday.
