Jury finds Sikeston man guilty

Thursday, November 20, 2003

BENTON - It took a jury about three hours to find a Sikeston man guilty of statutory sodomy in the first degree.

Elmer L. Tyra was found guilty following a two-day jury trial, which ended Tuesday. The charges against Tyra stem from an incident which occurred between Aug. 15 and Aug. 16, 2001, at a residence on Ruth Street in Sikeston. According to the information filed with the court, Tyra had deviate sexual intercourse with a person who was then less than 12 years old.

Scott County Prosecuting Attorney Paul Boyd said he was pleased with Tyra's conviction. "The jury did their job and a tough job it was," said Boyd.

During the trial, the prosecution called five witnesses, including the victim and the victim's mother. Two persons testified in Tyra's defense.

Sentencing for Tyra is set for January, facing punishment which ranges from 10 years to life in prison.
