Shooting suspect arrested

BLOOMFIELD -- A suspect is being held at the Stoddard County Jail awaiting formal charges for the shooting of an Advance man late Monday.

According to Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner, at 9:05 p.m. the sherriff's department received a 911 call reporting a shooting at 34098 State Highway 25, about one mile north of Advance.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the 73-year-old victim, James Smith, had been shot in the lower abdomen. The officers also made contact with a suspect, who lives in the home, and took the person into custody.

Smith was treated at the scene by Stoddard County Emergency Medical Services and later airlifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, where he was listed in stable condition.

The incident is being investigated by the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department with the assistance of Advance Police Department, Bloomfield Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Dexter Police Department.
