Charleston nips East Prairie, 12-11
ORAN - The Eagles led 7-0 after one inning and 18-0 after two to win easily 20-0 in five innings over Oak Ridge on Tuesday.
Matt Seyer picked up the win for the Eagles. He combined with Trevor Irwin and Craig Friga to throw five innings, allowing three hits with six walks and three strikeouts.
Oran (4-1) was led by Nathan Seyer, who went 2-3 with an RBI. Others were Joey Bickings (1-3, 2 RBIs), Trey Graviett (1-3, 2 RBIs) and Matt Seyer (1-1, 2B, 3 RBIs).
The Eagles will play at Poplar Bluff today at 4 p.m.
CHARLESTON - The Charleston Bluejays moved over the .500 mark with a 12-11 win over East Prairie on Tuesday.
The Bluejays (4-3, 1-1 Scott-Mississippi) used an 8-run fourth inning to go ahead 11-7.
Charleston got four consecutive hits to start the inning before Marcus Dixon plated two runs with a double. Ryan Ford added a two-run single in the inning.
Dixon also picked up the win, throwing 3 2/3 innings and allowing four runs off five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Dustin Smoot started the game and lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven unearned runs off six hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Rhett Thompson led the Bluejays with three hits and an RBI. Others were Smoot (2-3, 2 runs), Dixon (1-3, 2 RBIs, 3 runs), Ford (2-3, 4 RBIs, run), Nathan Pullen (1-2), Andrew DeField (1-1, run, 3 BB) and A.H. Marshall (1-4, run).
"Being over .500 is a positive thing, that was one of our goals before the season," said Charleston head coach Brent Anderson. "At this point we're just trying to survive. We're playing a lot of young kids and we're tying to keep our head above water. For a young ballclub I'm pretty happy, but I think there was a couple other games we could've won. When we get Lezcano (Dean) back in a couple weeks that will give us a boost."
Charleston defeated Egyptian (Ill.) on Monday 8-4. The Bluejays will play host to Oak Ridge today at 4:15 p.m.
ESSEX - Richland fell to 0-3 on the season with the loss to Puxico on Tuesday.
The Rebels' Tim Comstock took the loos, throwing all seven innings and allowing nine runs (six earned) off seven hits and two walks. He struck out 10.
James Wheeler had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Rebels. Jason Vandiver, Landon Wheeler, Jordan Kettles and Brandon Moore each had one hit. Vandiver and Landon Wheeler each scored runs.
Richland will play at Leopold on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
