Sikeston voters approve Charter

SIKESTON - Sikeston will have a new councilperson and a new government with wards and a voter-elected mayor.

For the two open city council seats, Sikeston voters in Scott County picked incumbent Phil Boyer, who received 1,464 votes or 39 percent; and Sue Rogers with 1,158 votes which was 30.85 percent of the total.

Incumbent Bill Mitchell received 29.81 percent of the vote with 1,119.

Boyer had the highest numbers in seven of the 10 Scott County precincts with Rogers receiving the most votes in the Broadway, Clayton and Sunset precincts.

The Home Rule Charter was approved by nearly 63 percent of voters, passing 1,314 to 892 in Scott County.

Option A, which calls for mayors to be elected by popular vote, received the most votes with 1,239 to Option B's 892 which would have kept the council-selected mayor system.

The Charter was approved in each of the Scott County precincts except McMullin which voted it down 2-0.
