Looking Back in Time at Dec. 23

Monday, December 23, 2002

SIKESTON - Dick Tongate, Bob McCord, Joe Allen and James Martin, students at Westminster College, Fulton, are spending the holidays with their families in Sikeston.

DEXTER - Millions of starlings and blackbirds are giving Dexter citizens economic growth and health problems. The problem is so acute that a Stoddard County group has asked the Conservation Commission for help.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston High School Orchestra, under the direction of Jane Harold, traveled to the elementary schools Monday to perform a medley of Christmas songs and ensembles for the students and teachers.

SIKESTON - Clem Beal, vice president of the Bank of Sikeston, announced today that he is a candidate for the Sikeston City Council.

SIKESTON - Two groups of Middle School students are spreading Christmas cheer to needy families. Although the kindness shown by the school's Just Say No Club benefited Linda Bowers, the focus was her daughter, 10-year-old Leslie, who has cerebral palsy. Club officers raised money by selling sweatshirts, face painting and through donations. With the proceeds, they bought several presents for Leslie. "These are the first presents under Leslie's tree," Mrs. Bowers said. "She had cataracts until they were removed in February and her eyes were badly crossed, but in June she had surgery and had them fixed. This will really be the first Christmas she has been able to see all the lights and decorations."
