Tax money in Scott County increasing

Wednesday, March 9, 2005

BENTON - After a slow start, sales tax revenues for Scott County are up, according to county officials.

During the regular county commission meeting Tuesday, Commissioner Jamie Burger said sales tax receipts for March are up $23,849.93 from March 2004.

"That's pretty significant for that month," said Commissioner Dennis Ziegenhorn. "That is good, though. It says people are buying."

"We're up $30,242 for the first three months," Burger added.

"We were down a little last month but it picked up this month," said Rita Milam, county clerk.

In other business during Tuesday's county commission meeting, commissioners appointed Shirley Essner of Benton to the Riverside Regional Public Library board to fill the unexpired term created by Joe Evans of Blodgett's resignation.

Commissioners also discussed the return of the 1140th National Guard unit. Ziegenhorn said it was a pleasure to "welcome our boys back home."

Burger said a county highway department employee that was deployed with the 1140th will return to work April 4.
