STURDIVANT - Hurshel E. "Gene" Smith, 79, formerly of Pyletown, died Jan. 25, 2005, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born April 7, 1925, in Pyletown, son of the late William Francis and Minnie Kay Eaves Smith, he lived in Sturdivant for the past seven years and was a retired truck driver and farmer. A member of the Bridge Church of Christ, he also attended the Bethel Church near Advance. He was a veteran of World War II and member of the Masonic Lodge in Bernie.
On Nov. 22, 1948, at Piggott, Ark., he married Wanda Lea Gaines who preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 1996.
He and Ruby W. Swift-Howard were married Nov. 27, 1997, in Sturdivant and she survives of the home.
Other survivors include: three sons, Brian Scott Smith, Ronald E. Smith and Leon Smith of Dexter; four stepdaughters, Phillis Robinett of Advance, Lecie Winberry of St. Louis, Shelia Owens of Jackson and Regina Householder of Cruger, Miss.; and six grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren and 17 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were six brothers, Thomas Smith, Irvin Smith, Delbert Smith, Roy Smith, Don Cox and Ted Cox; and one sister, Bertha Grote.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, where Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m.
Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Ray Placher of Puxico and Stan Dauck of Bernie officiating.
Full graveside military rites will be conducted at the Armstead-Dowdy Cemetery near Dexter.
