SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs fell to 8-13 on the season with a 60-32 loss to Parkway Central on Saturday.

The uninspired performance ranks as one of the worst of the year for a team that has been slipping the last few weeks, losing six of its last seven.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Colts but fell apart after that as the St. Louis team dominated the rest of the way.

"We were very uninspired," said Sikeston coach Gregg Holifield. "We were coming in off the homecoming letdown and just didn't have much energy or effort. You know as well as I do that we have to play as hard as we possibly can. We have to play extremely hard to compete and we didn't do that."

The Colts (7-14) were able to take a 16-8 first quarter lead and continued to extend it in the second quarter by relentlessly pounding the ball inside to their bigger post players.

"We don't score very good, but we got easy basket after easy basket," said Parkway Central coach Rick Kirby. "It seemed like the ball bounced our way. I'm not sure we're that much better than those guys, but we'll take the wins any way we can get them. It appears to me that Sikeston struggles to put the ball in the basket a little bit, but I've seen some of their scores and they've scored in the 60s and 70s, so I'm not sure what happened tonight."

The Colts took a 29-15 lead into halftime. They outscored the Bulldogs 31

-17 in the second half to record the blowout victory.

Holifield said his team's lack of defensive intensity allowed the Colts to pull away.

"They're a well-schooled team and they're well-coached -- (Kirby) has always done a great job there -- but we were allowing them to do what they wanted and you're going to look darn good when that happens," said Holifield.

Parkway Central was led by senior guard Byron Watkins' 17 points. Brandon Jones, a 6-5 senior, controlled the boards and followed up with 14 points.

Sikeston was led by Julian Beard's eight points.

The Bulldogs play at New Madrid County Central Tuesday.
