Risco defeats conference foe Southland

CARDWELL - The Risco Tigers defeated Southland on their homecoming night 42-41 on Friday. Risco led 11-2 after one quarter and was able to withstand the Southland comeback.

Risco was led by Andrew Halford's 19 points.

"We didn't play great but we played good enough to win," said Risco coach Brandon Blankenship. "Sometimes you win and it ain't pretty. This was one of those."

Risco (6-9, 3-3 in Tri-County Conference) will host North Pemiscot on Tuesday.

MARQUAND -- Jay Francis scored 26 points to lead Marquand past Zalma.

Zalma was led by Tim Landing's 22 points.

Marquand's junior varsity defeated Zalma 89-45.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

JACKSON -- Jackson held on to a 26-19 halftime lead and went on to defeat Nerinx Hall at home.

"We had a good spurt in the second quarter when we made some plays," Jackson coach Sam Sides said. "It may have been the best we've played in two weeks."

Bobbie Jones led the Indians (18-1) with 16 points. Kylie Werner added 12 points, and Lindsay Poole scored 11.

Nerinx Hall edged Jackson 51-48 in the JV game.

ST. LOUIS - Notre Dame suffered a first-round loss to the host squad in the eight-team Villa Duchesne Queen of Hearts tournament in St. Louis County.

Amber Karnes led the Bulldogs (4-13) with eight points. Notre Dame plays a losers bracket game at 12:30 p.m. today.

JACKSON - In the eighth-grade bracket of the Jackson tournament, Poplar Bluff beat Jackson for the title and Central beat Sikeston for third place.
