BENTON - The State Tax Commission has issued an order that 15 counties in Missouri must increase their total real estate tax assessments by 10 percent and Scott County is one of the 15 so designated.

20 years ago: July 11, 1982

NEW MADRID - A proposed increase in the city's sanitation rate was discussed but no action was taken the City Council Tuesday evening. The increase as proposed because of a $19,946 loss by the city in 1981.

EAST PRAIRIE - Miss Pre-Teen Sweetcorn for 1992 is 10-year-old Jessica Miller, daughter of Larry and Judy Miller of New Madrid. Named first runner-up in the pageant, sponsored by the East Prairie Nursing Center, was Page Sutton, 5, daughter of Randy and Kristi Sutton of East Prairie. Second runner up was Courtney Thomas, 12, daughter of Richard and Kathie Thurmond of East Prairie and Larry Thomas of Pearl, Miss.


SIKESTON - Conservation agents in Southeast Missouri are requesting help from local fishermen, landowners and others to detect illegal musseling activity. Last summer several arrests were made for the illegal harvesting of freshwater mussel shells for commercial sale from area streams and drainage ditches. Because of the potential for high profit, illegal activity has increased in recent years, especially by out-of-state musselers.
